Burts Gwalia Bakery – Our Brand Story
Our story begins in 1914, when Reginald Charles Burt became the resident baker at the original Gwalia Bakery in Ogmore Vale. Established as part of a general store serving the local coal mining community, Gwalia Stores quickly became a vital part of daily life. Over time, the store evolved into the Ogmore Vale Bakery, and today, we proudly continue that legacy as Burts Gwalia Bakery.
The original Gwalia Stores is now preserved as a heritage building at St Fagans National Museum of History in Cardiff—a fitting tribute to its place in Welsh history.
At Burts Gwalia Bakery, we specialise in traditional British teatime cakes and hand-decorated novelty shortbread biscuits. As a long-established, third-generation family business, we continue to honour our roots. Each generation of the Burt family remains hands-on in the making, selling, and distribution of our products.
Staying true to our heritage, we use authentic, time-honoured recipes created by our founders. Every cake and biscuit is crafted with high-quality ingredients and artisan baking methods, delivering the rich flavours and comforting textures that have made us a teatime favourite for over 100 years.
From our humble beginnings in Gwalia Stores, to becoming a cherished name in British baking, Burts Gwalia Bakery continues to uphold the same commitment to quality, tradition, and family values. Today, our cakes and biscuits are enjoyed not only across Britain, but around the world.
